Live Performances

"Not only can his hands move like lightning like the Gypsy Kings, but his voice is smooth, velvety and invokes a strength that moves even the biggest music skeptic." — The Port Theatre

What happens when a teenage metalhead from suburban North America gets dropped into the classical conservatories of Portugal — and comes out the other side with an Emmy?

You get Eric Harper.

Equal parts virtuoso and storyteller, Eric has carved out a sound that defies easy categorization: fiery flamenco guitar fused with the confessional intimacy of singer-songwriter, sung in English and Portuguese, with the soulful momentum of Dave Matthews and the rhythmic fire of the Gipsy Kings. It's a genre unto itself — and once you hear it live, you understand why.

His path here was anything but conventional. Guitar lessons at 12. A family move to Portugal at 15. Conservatory training at the Calouste Gulbenkian in Braga, then the Professional School of Music in Porto. Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Film Scoring in two and a half years. Then Los Angeles, where his flamenco-rock band MimosA sold out Victoria's McPherson Theatre on the same night Sarah McLachlan was performing across town.

Since then, Eric has won a Primetime Emmy, placed music in over 6,000 TV episodes (How I Met Your Mother, Shameless, Top Gear, America's Got Talent), scored international films, composed for the United Nations, and toured across Canada, the US, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Iceland, France, Israel, China, and Mexico. He has collaborated with Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, Andy Grammer, and drawn the attention of The Office's Rainn Wilson.

But ask anyone who's seen Eric Harper live, and they'll tell you the same thing: the resume is impressive, but the show is something else entirely. Expect virtuosic guitar, hilarious road stories from a life lived across continents, and music that moves you whether you planned on it or not. There will be laughs. There will be tears. There will almost certainly be dancing.

Eric performs solo (90 min / two 45-min sets) and also as a duo with flamenco guitarist Doug Towle, in the style of Rodrigo y Gabriela.
